“LET THE ONES WHO KNOW, TELL THE ONES WHO DON’T”
HODJA NASREDDIN, PARABLES AND DESIGNS

30th October - 13th November 2008

2008; It is the 800. Anniversary of Hodja Nasreddin’s birthday and it has been celebrated as the “Year of Hodja Nasreddin”.

His funny stories haven’t been forgotten for as long as 800 years. On the contrary, even after his death, thousands of new stories have been told as if he actually lived them. Besides his stories are never outdated, they always stay fresh.

Hodja Nasreddin left a mark not only on Turkey, but on everywhere when the name “Turk” came out. Moreover in Iran, Azerbaijan, North Africa, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, he was internalized with similar names.

          On this important anniversary of Hodja Nasreddin, with the precision of artists, Eray Özbek and Cem Günen personally endeavor to prepare a special exhibition. They name the exhibition after a well-known story of Hodja, “Let the ones who know, tell the ones who don’t”.

          In this exhibition the artists refer to Hodja Nasreddin’s stories, with a special kind of design and calligraphy, they composed 47 expressive pieces. Cem Günen has developed the concept of the exhibition, chosen the subjects, scenarios, wits and copies. Designs have been done by the well-known caricature artist, Eray Özbek. He uses Latin letters in a way that they resemble the traditional art of calligraphy.

Both of them have degrees in architecture, both productive men of many parts having been active in various art fields. Eray Özbek has won prizes with his works that “aim to move the aesthetic and humorous senses” and made the Turkish caricature known abroad, as well. On the other hand, Cem Günen has written stories, poems, and essays. Three of his plays are adopted by the national Theatre.

The exhibition is going to be opened on the 30th of October at 06:00 PM and can be viewed until the 13th of November.

Biographies;

Cem GÜNEN

          I was born in Adapazarı on 1942. I was educated in different districts that my civil servant father was assigned to. I began primary school in İstanbul-Yeşilköy, continued it in Amasya and finished it in Kastamonu-Taşköprü. Went to junior high school in Manisa-Alaşehir and high school in İzmir-Karşıyaka.

         With the local characteristics of places, to where the developments and innovations reached very hard, my childhood memories have increased in variety and grew richer in a period of time far beyond my age. In 1960, I began studying architecture in the National Academy of Fine Arts. I was graduated in 1974.

        During my long years of education, I had several interests like journalism and amateur acting. When I had the time for myself after long years of my professional life, I was back to my world with stories, poems and essays.

The only difference was that I wanted to share my work with my human brothers. My three plays about the great Ottoman architect, Sinan were adopted by the National Theatre. I have written a new play named “Hodja Nasreddin between comrades”.

Eray ÖZBEK

         In 1942, I was born in Muğla. I had an architecture degree from the National Academy of Fine Arts. I worked as an architect for years. In 1951, my first exhibition took place at my primary school in Bergama.

         I had been the students of Şeref Bigalı in Karşıyaka High School and of Aziz Nesin in Zübük magazine. I have made caricatures and illustrations by using patches, silhouettes, collages and original prints. Since 60’s, my caricatures have been published in magazines like Zübük, Akbaba, Diyojen, 7 Gün, Ünlem, İzmir- Life and in more than 300 mixed albums. I had eleven personal exhibitions among which two of them were abroad. I made a series named “Lyric Cartoons” that included poetic lines. I have an album called “Silhouettes”.

         In 25 countries I have won 73 international prizes, more than 100 in total.  Among them, there are the “Golden Date” from Bordighera-Italy, “Band Cartoon Grand Prize” from Marostica, “1999 the Cartoonist of the Year” from the Cartoon Foundation and “Yunus Nadi Cartoon Prize”. I have attended the festivals in countries like Italy, Greece, Iran, Belgium, Ukraine and Serbia in order to collect my prizes or as a jury member.
