HAIKUS and MÂNİ (VERSES)
The graphic interpretations of Japanese Haikus and Anatolian Mâni (Verses) by 2nd year Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design students at Bahçeşehir University will take place at Schneidertempel Art Center and Bahçeşehir University Beşiktaş Campus outdoor facade by June 5th through 21st, 2009.
Haiku is a form of literature in Japan, which is becoming more widely appreciated around the world in the last century. In its simplest definition, Haiku is a short poem formed of only three lines and 17 Japanese characters (or syllables). In a classical Haiku, there are a seasonal element, a piece of nature or an impression of an instant feeling. Mâni, on the other hand is a form of folk verse poetry from Anatolia about more or less anything. Usually it’s first, second and forth lines rhyme.
The student’s visual interpretations of these word-based creative products are formed of the togetherness of photography, illustrations and typography wandering about the borders of the funny, absurd through the melancholic and the real. The texts gain new visual meanings in the hands of the young designers.
