BASMANE ‘’HOTEL STREET’’
PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

- The photography exhibit ‘’Hotel Street’’ at İzmir’s Basmane district consists of 60 photographs.
- The photography exhibit Basmane ‘’Hotel Street’’ by Yusuf Tuvi and Birol Üzmez will be opened at the Schneidertemple Art Centre.
A new exhibit is coming to İstanbul which reflects the long forgotten, nostalgic neighbourhood of Basmane in İzmir. The photography exhibit
‘’Hotel Street’’ by the photographers Yusuf Tuvi and Birol Üzmez, members of IFOD (İzmir Photographic Scociety) will bring together the photography lovers of Istanbul on Wednesday February 8 2012, at 6 pm. at Schneidertemple Art Centre at Galata. This exhibit of 60 photographs depicting the colorful but tough life in Basmane, will be open till February 29, 2012.
The photographs show the transition of Basmane with its historical buildings from 1800’s from being a wealthy residential area in the first years of the Turkish republic to the times when it was abandoned. This changing face of Basmane, is reminded with the ‘’Hotel Street’’ exhibition.
People entering İzmir from Basmane Railway Station, first encounter the poverty, weariness and the harmony of this neighbourhood where they plan to stay. Against all odds, it is the perception of the photographers which show the liveliness of the district.
The photographs of the refugees, immigrants and people staying at these hotels unaware of their history, were taken in a time span of one year.

WHO IS BİROL ÜZMEZ?
Birol Uzmez, who reflected the lives of mine workers to his photographs in Zonguldak where he lived for long years, was born in Akçakoca in August 20, 1960. In 1984, he began to take interest in the artistic view of his father's profession, who was also a photographer and became a member of the Association of Photograph and Cinema Amateurs in Istanbul (IFSAK) in 1986.
In 1985 together with Fahri Bozbas and Ertugrul Unal, he set an exhibition named "Once Upon a Time Zonguldak” using the photos collected from the archives of Nazim Baysal, who was one of the first photographers in Zonguldak. Following to the exhibition "Window" which he arranged together with Ugur Kasirga in 1986, he set two other joint-exhibitions, "Loneliness" with Ayhan Ulku and "Life of a Miner" with Ibrahim Akyurek.
He worked as a member of TUSAK Board in 1987-1988. Founding the Zonguldak Photographers Group with his six friends in 1986, he continued to work for the development of photograph art in Zonguldak. He set four Zonguldak Photograph Days with that goup. He revealed the photos in the archives of the architect Sureyya Aytac..
He worked for Cumhuriyet Newspaper between 1990-1993 as a free reporting photographer and documented the strike in 1990 and the firedamp disaster in 1992. He took place in the formation of the "Group for Documented Photographs" composed of Ibrahim Akyurek, Sirin Kucuktabak, Sevil Uzrek, Faruk Akbas ve Celal Deniz.
Uzmez, whose photos were awarded both in National and International Contests, realized transparent exhibitions named "A Day of Three Lives", "Testings and Being Mistaken", "Other Face of Zonguldak", "Long Silences", "Short Blows", "Rowboats", "Following the Olive Tree", "Mortakya, Gypsy Heros". He attented mixed displays and transparent exhibitions.
Settling in Izmir in 1993, Uzmez began working at the Directorate of Press and Public Relations in Taris and took place among the founders of Taris Photographers Group. He set his first exhibition in Izmir at American Cultural Association together with Enver Akmaner in 1994 and since that time, he has been meeting with many lovers of art in Izmir at mixed exhibitions.
Worked as a photograph editor at the Press Consultancy of Taris Olive-oil Union between May 2002 and March 2008 and after the Union gave priority to artistic approach in its product designs, his photos began to be used on the posters, magazines, stickers, catalogues, advertisements, plasma tv screens and website of the institution he was working for.
Today, he carries on working freely as a member of Simurg Photos and Ifod.

WHO IS YUSUF TUVİ?
He was born Izmir in 1938.
He graduated from Istanbul Technical University Electricity Branch in 1960.
He began to photograph in 1974.
In 1983 he was awarded with the title “AFIAP” by the ”International Federation of Photography Arts”, after his works were exhibited in several Internatıonal FIAP Photography contests.
His works are peridically published in Eczacıbaşı annuals and many others photography and travel magazines.
His work about the city of Newyork has been published by “Doğan Kitapçılık A.Ş”.
Four of his photographs has been accepted by ISTANBUL MODERN museum and has been exhibited.
Also he is the creator of a slide show ”Our Land Our People” which promotes Turkey’s many faces.
He had several one man shows and exhibitions.
He is member of Istanbul IFSAK and İzmir IFOD associations.

In 1985 Ist prize and five mansions in “Enka Holding Arts Foundation” photography contest,
Again in 1985 “FIAP Silver Medal” award in Reus 7. International FIAP photography contest,
In 1991 “FIAP Silver Medal” award in Istanbul 6. International FIAP photography contest,
And finally in December 1994 he ranked in the first ten between fifteen thusand photos and won a special prize in English International “Ballantine’s Finest” photography contest.
